Bachelor’s in Direction of Music

Study Objectives

By the end of a bachelor’s degree in Direction of Music,  students should have developed the technical skills, as well as relevant musical knowledge and critical thinking ability that will allow them to realise their personal artistic vision and ambitions. To this end particular emphasis is placed on the study of the methodologies and techniques of piano accompaniment and the interaction of vocal lines. Adequate ability should also be achieved in sight/score reading, conducting technique and the practice of the basso continuo. These objectives are achieved in part through a significant internship/study placement. Students are supported in the development of musical “ear” and to obtain the knowledge specific to the organisation, composition, history and analysis of music and the relationship between these aspects. By the end of a bachelor’s students should have acquired a thorough understanding of the professional, executive and stylistic aspects of music leadership. Further study objectives of the course include the attainment of sufficient skills in musical ICT as well as the study of a second language.

Job Prospects

This course offers students the possibility of employment in the following professions:

  • Piano accompanist for vocal music in the operatic and chamber repertoire
  • Pianist in instrumental ensembles
  • All of the following internship placements are available as laid out in the regulations of the fondazioni lirico-sinfoniche:
    – Assistant stage manager
    – Lighting tech
    – Assistant choirmaster
    – Assistant director of music (assistant conductor, accompanist) in a theatre
    – Prompter
    – Assistant director of music (assistant conductor, accompanist) in rehearsals
